Graduate Student Awards & Milestones

Future Interdisciplinary Research Explorations (FIRE) program, ACES Office of Research 2019-2021 – Arthur/ Taha

  • The FIRE grant program encourages creativity and collaboration between ACES faculty and research partners (internal and external to UIUC).

Jeannette Chu and Winston Y. Lo Fellowship in Food Science and Human Nutrition 2019 – Chen

  • This graduate fellowship provides support to FSHN students via the College of ACES at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kraft Heinz Company Human Nutrition Fellowship – 2019 – Burton Obanla

  • The Kraft Heinz Company Human Nutrition Fellowship Program is an endowment from Kraft Heinz Company in effort to increase diversity in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. This fellowship is reserved for under-represented minority applicants who are US citizens.

Julia Outhouse Holmes Scholarship merit award – May 2019 – Taha

  • The Holmes Fellowship Merit Award is a merit-based fellowship award that presented to graduate students in the FSHN department. Specifically for graduate students who conduct research in nutrition.

Graduate Student International Research Grant – April 2019, April 2018 – Taha

  • ACES International Graduate Grants are intended to fund international activities undertaken by Graduate Students in the College of ACES. This grant will be used to travel to visit the Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem to meet with physicians, researchers, and administrators in order to develop a research collaboration at the hospital.

Palliative care gift grant to support research at the Augusta Victoria Hospital – Aug 2018 – Arthur/ Taha

  • This grant was gifted by Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH) to support a research collaboration project that will be conducted in the AVH.
Kathryn VanAken Burns Memorial Fund merit award – May 2018 – Taha
  • A merit-based fellowship is presented to students pursuing a graduate degree in FSHN department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 
Elizabeth Jeffrey Jr. Graduate Travel Award – March 2018 – Taha
  • The Elizabeth Jeffery Jr. Graduate Travel Award is given annually to a first-year graduate student in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Priority is given to students from under-represented groups. 

The John Milner Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Research Practicum – March 2018 – Taha

  • A highly competitive four day research practicum sponsored by the Nutritional Science Research Group, National Cancer Institute & the Department of Nutrition at the Clinical Center; National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD.

American Society Preventative Oncology (ASPO) Top 17 Abstract – March 2018 – Crowder

  • An abstract submitted to the 2018 ASPO conference was one of the 17 top-ranked and has been accepted for publication in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. There were a record number of 274 abstracts submitted this year in which the abstract was chosen for an oral presentation during paper sessions at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York, NY.

Vision 20/20 – November 2017- Arthur

  • To catalyze unique nutrition-related research on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, the Division of Nutritional Sciences and the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences have partnered to create DNS Vision 20/20. The award is provided on a competitive basis to interdisciplinary teams for projects with the potential to provide new trans-formative innovations in nutrition or solutions to nutrition-related diseases.

Colgate-Palmolive Fellowship in Nutrition and Oral Health 2017-2019- Crowder

  • The goal of this fellowship to is to determine how chronic nutrition impact symptoms are associated with quality of life, diet quality and preferences, and nutritional status in post-treatment head and neck cancer survivors.

Christopher Family Foundation Food and Family Program Grant- 2017- Arthur

  • Grant will be use to identify the role that food security plays in cancer survivorship and how cancer survivors prioritize their nutrition and food needs.

Oncology DPG Small Project Research Grant for 2017 – 2019- Arthur / Crowder

  • This award is given to support research in the field of oncology nutrition at the graduate or post-doctoral level. The grant is provided by Oncology Nutrition: a dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Julia Holmes Fund Merit Award 2017- Crowder

  • This award is presented to a student pursuing graduate level research. It is presented by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Toshiro Nishida Research Award 2017- Crowder

  • This award provides support for travel to national or international scientific conferences. Awards are given based on quality and originality of a student’s abstract and presentation. This fund is sponsored by the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Cancer Scholars Translation and Applied Research (C*STAR) Fellowship 2017-Crowder

  • This graduate educational program is a joint project through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Carle Foundation Hospital aiming to foster translational research and near-term benefits to patients in the community. The graduate education program is supported by an NIH T-32 grant.
